Rodric White is proud to release his new album ‘BLUES FOR BOB’ inspired by / dedicated to legendary Australian jazz pianist composer Bobby Gebert.

Collaborating with celebrated saxophonist composer Dale Barlow and Bobby’s prestigious rhythm section of bassist Jonathan Zwartz and drummer Andrew Dickeson, the quartet has recorded new music inspired by Bobby Gebert, honouring his remarkable legacy.

The Bobby Gebert Trio featuring Jonathan and Andrew were the rhythm section of choice for International Artists Mark Murphy, Junior Cook, Johnny Griffin, Eddie Henderson, Claire Martin, Richie Cole, Ronnie Scott and Justin Robinson, on tour in Australia and featured in Concert at the Manly International Jazz Festival and The Basement (Sydney).

Dale Barlow enjoyed a long close professional association and friendship with Bobby over many years, even receiving driving lessons from the Maestro.

Rodric White was fortunate to study jazz privately with Bobby, receiving a two hour piano lesson every Friday morning at the Gebert family apartment in Cammeray (Sydney).

For this project, Dale and Rodric wrote new compositions, choosing other music strongly associated with Bobby: music by Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Ray Brown, George Cables, plus standards by Cole Porter and Jay Livingston / Ray Evans.

The Quartet recorded their album in November 2025 at Electric Avenue Studios (Pyrmont, Sydney) in the expert hands of sound engineer Phil Punch. The ten tracks were mixed by Phil and Jem Hoppe. The album was mastered by Bob Scott.

BLUES FOR BOB is an exciting captivating album featuring Australia’s finest jazz musicians, with lots of great musical surprises, energetic performances, outstanding solos and superb ensemble playing.

Rodric White’s new album draws inspiration from, and is dedicated to, the legendary jazz pianist and composer Bobby Gebert. Early in his career, White was fortunate to visit Gebert’s Cammeray apartment every Friday for two hours of tuition and in-depth jazz discussions with the man who played alongside Bernie McGann, Johnny Griffin, and Mark Murphy.

For this project, White joins forces with internationally acclaimed saxophonist Dale Barlow, who shared a long friendship and musical association with Gebert, and Gebert’s long time rhythm section: bassist Jonathan Zwartz, whose warm, resonant sound anchors the music, and drummer Andrew Dickeson, who keeps the compositions dancing with a blend of drive, finesse, and well-placed accents.

Together, they honour the jazz icon’s legacy. The recording features new compositions from Barlow and White, Parramatta Road and Bobby’s Driving Lessons by Barlow, and Blues For Bob and Friday Mornings in Cammeray from White, with Barlow on flute. Alongside these are other works closely associated with Bobby, including pieces by Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Ray Brown, and George Cables.

Rather than relying solely on familiar standards, White has curated a repertoire that showcases the breadth of his musical interests and offers a heartfelt tribute to Bobby Gebert. His original compositions build organically on his and his fellow members’ improvisations. White’s thoughtful harmonic movement reveals he is far more than a mere interpreter; he channels every influence through his distinctly modern perspective.

“This album features three great Australian musicians playing under the leadership of the excellent pianist Rodric White. It’s a tribute to legendary Sydney pianist Bobby Gebert who, in his career, pushed the boundaries of the music as a player and composer. Now 82, he’s no longer playing.
It’s appropriate that Jonathan Zwartz (bass) and Andrew Dickeson (drums) are present, for two reasons: one, they ensure that the rhythm section is flying throughout; and two, they both played on the Gebert Trio’s classic album The Sculptor, nominated for the 1995 ARIA Award for best jazz album.
Completing the quartet is saxophonist Dale Barlow, one of a rare breed, an Australian who was truly successful in New York. His familiar tenor provides one of the signature sounds in Australian jazz.
There are ten tracks here, with Barlow and White each providing two originals. Otherwise the repertoire includes jazz standards by composers such as Ray Brown, George Cables and McCoy Tyner, plus two tunes from the Great American Songbook.
Not all the album’s highlights can be mentioned in a thumbnail review, but one is Bass Blues In E featuring Zwartz and Dickeson; another is White’s solo piano version of Monk’s beautiful composition Pannonica.”
